Circulation on Contact - The Importance of Hemodynamics

Clinical studies report a plexus of veins in the foot acts as a powerful venous pump in the weight bearing phase of normal movement (ambulation). As each step is taken, the application of weight to the bottom of the foot results in longitudinal flattening and stretching of the plantar arch, causing the venous plantar plexus to collapse and empty. This sends a column of blood to the right atrium of the heart, allowing the plexus to refill.

The ejection of blood is so powerful that it is able to overcome a calf cuff inflated to 100mmHg and send a column of blood back to the heart! But when patients are immobile, this circulatory action ends.

  Clinical Evidence
  Cashman et al studied 64 patients after ankle fractures and found that the A-V Impulse System was extremely effective in the reduction of ankle swelling, allowing earlier surgery and a shorter hospital stay. It is equally effective in the reduction of swelling after wrist fracture.

For immobilized patients, the Arterial Venous (A-V) Impulse System® provides the benefit of ambulation. Working with the venous plantar plexus in the sole of the foot, the A-V Impulse System®:
  • provides Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis;
  • reduces pain and swelling in the lower limbs, foot and ankle;
  • enhances arterial blood flow in the lower limb.

The A-V Impulse System® is composed of an air supply hose, inflation pad, and connected controller. For more detailed technical information on the A-V Impulse System®, see our page on the A-V Impulse System® Inflation Pad or the recent presentation on Impulse Technology. Also visit our Clinical Studies page for details on the methods and results.

Assured Effectiveness

The A-V Impulse System® foot pump is designed to artificially stimulate the venous foot pump for immobilized patients. Its highly pulsatile action substantially enhances venous blood flow in the posterior-tibial, popliteal, and femoral veins. Clinical studies show a 250% increase in venous blood flow velocity in the popliteal vein.

Requiring foot access only, the exclusive ImPad® inflation pad works in conjunction with the easy-to-use controller to deliver preset parameters at the touch of a button. The A-V Impulse System® is clinically proven to reduce the incidence of DVT, reduce pain and swelling after injury and surgery, and increase arterial blood flow.

Kendall 6060 A-V Impulse System®

The system's clinically proven operating parameters include:

  • 0.4 second rapid inflation to simulate the weight bearing process;
  • 1 or 3 second impulse hold times to accommodate all injury types;
  • 20 second deflation between impulses for complete refilling of the plexus;
  • 125 mm Hg optimal impulse pressure to balance effectiveness and patient comfort, with a range of 50 to 200 mm Hg pressure available to accommodate individual patient requirements.

The design of the A-V Impulse System® incorporates features not found on other physical rehabilitation systems. These include:

  • an anatomically shaped bladder to ensure the plantar plexus is completely covered during each impulse;
  • a rigid sole incorporated in the foot cover option to contain and direct the impulse.
Safety by Design

For superior performance and safety, the A-V Impulse System® provides additional unique features for a patient.
  • automatic pressure adjustment allowing the system to compensate for any changes in patient positioning while still delivering clinically proven pressures;
  • pressure feedback lights for easy monitoring, indicating to the clinician the pressure levels that are being delivered;
  • low and high pressure audio and visual alarms to indicate if pressures vary from the desired therapeutic range, preventing pressures from reaching levels greater than 200 mm Hg.

The A-V Impulse System® also provides easy to use features, including:

  • single touch consistency delivers the optimal clinically proven parameters;
  • easy-to-read pressure display provides constant confirmation of actual delivered pressures with one quick glance;
  • independently operated dual channels provide treatment flexibility based on individual patient requirements;
  • integrated bed mount provides easy access to control panel and display as well as a secure, convenient means of positioning the controller;
  • compact design (five inches deep, 7.5 pounds) minimizes the area required on the end of the bed;
  • easy-to-understand icons to make system corrections simple.
