A Comparison of Crushed Ice and Continuous Flow Cold Therapy

For Patient Therapeutic Temperature Management...

Today, the medcom group, ltd. continues to search out and offer to our facilities and patients to maintain our position as a specialist in patient cold therapy. Cold therapy is a documented technology to facilitate in the reduction of edema and subsequently, pain.  Our objectives are to improve our ability to deliver state-of-the-art technology applications, and to pursue new solutions for our customers.

Medcom has chosen to be subservient to the practicing health care professional.  We provide product, service, and information designed to assist the health care professional in their efforts to provide the most positive healing environment to their patients.  Medcom is an active part of the surgeon's rehabilitation team.

Medcom defers to the surgeons standard of practice and care and offers them the tools necessary to attain their patients rehabilitation goals.   It is our philosophy of commitment to customer service and quality product selection that we dedicate our future.

There are many manufacturers of Cold Therapy products.  Medcom has chosen a few to present to you here.  There are two basic categories, coolers, sometimes called with the slang term of "buckets", that use a mixture of ice and water.  They need to be recharged with ice between every three (3) fours, to every ten (10) hours depending on model chosen and method of use.  These models are by far the most economical choice, starting at $145.00 and reaching $425.00 for the top-of-the -line.  The premier models use water and use electrical cooling systems to chill the water.  One is variable with a myriad of adjustments, monitors and controls, and one is basic and simple with one button - on/off.  These are very expensive to rent or buy.  You plug them in and top up the water every few weeks or so.  They are very simple to maintain, but very expensive.  There is a large dichotomy in models for the Thermos models to the self-chilling models with no in-between.

May we help you with your rehabilitation?

Portable Cold Therapy System
For use in hospital AND home

Accurate Electronic Temperature Control

The only unit providing up to 10 hours of continuous and effective cold therapy.  CSZ Portable Cold Therapy System, Model 707, offers three electronically controlled temperature ranges to ensure a therapeutic level of cold

Cool = 45F - 55F (7C - 13C)
Cold = 40F - 50F (4C - 10C)
Coldest = 35F - 45F (2C to 7C)

The Utmost in Flexibility

With a variety of specially designed pads and options like the four hour battery recharger and strapping system for back, hip, and knee, CSZ's Portable Cold Therapy System, Model 707, can provide cold therapy wherever and whenever it's needed... in the hospital, at home, at work or on vacation.

No Mess, Easy-Use Advanced Design

Unlike other units which must be raised to the level of the pad for adequate pumping, and taken off the bed bracket for lid access, the Portable Cold Therapy System, Model 707, can be operated from floor level and filled with hanging in place.

The electronically controlled pump motor has three speeds and is mounted externally so, unlike other units, it doesn't cause the ice to melt.

Breg
Cold Therapy Products
The Polar Care Cub is a cost effective manual system perfectly suited for managed care or minor procedures. The Cub offers a built-in hand pump to circulate the cold water through the Polar Pad, and at the same time increases compression around the joint. The Cub is designed for ease of use, portability and versatility in application ranging from sprains to post operative procedures.

A "plug and play" unit, BREG designed the Polar Care 300 to provide a regulated temperature of 47-50 degrees of cold through an innovative use of air power to circulate the ice water. This breakthrough dramatically simplifies operation, reduces size and weight and allows us to provide power through an air pump, electric or hand held. Both motor and hand pump are included.

The Polar Care 300 also offers the following benefits:

  • Automatic temperature
  • Compact & lightweight
  • Up to 8 hours of continuous cold
  • Compatible with all BREG cold therapy pads
  • Comes with both electric air pump and manual pump
The flagship of BREG's cold therapy product line, the Polar Care 500 offers a low cost, portable and simple to use product for continuous cold therapy. The unit includes a low voltage submersible pump with in-line thermometer and flow valve for temperature control from 35-70 degrees. During use, the pump is submerged in the cooler and connected to a Polar Pad with self sealing couplings. A wall transformer, optional auto adapter or battery case provide power to the pump.

Applications include:

  • Post operative use
  • Immediately following injury or trauma
  • Before and/or after physical therapy sessions
  • Athletic cold therapy needs

Models from MicroCool & Hot/Ice (Cool-It)

The Hot/Ice Micro-Cool Cold Therapy System

The MicroCool model is designed for hospital use and are very low maintenance.

  • Low cost thermoelectric cooling
  • Designed for inpatient, outpatient, and home therapy

The Hot/Ice Micro-Cool System uses advanced electronic technology to deliver effective cold therapy at a lower cost than traditional thermoelectric systems.

Thermoelectric cold therapy treatment is superior to ice. The Hot/Ice Micro-Cool Cold Therapy System is not only easier to use than ice, it is also safer than ice for patients. Traditional thermoelectric systems are sometimes too large for outpatient or home use, and they are more expensive and heavier than the Hot/Ice Micro-Cool System. The Hot/Ice Micro-Cool Therapy System provides hospitals, clinicians, and patients with low cost thermoelectric cooling, and a manageable alternative to ice.

  • Advanced technology and design -- Miniaturized circuitry provides low cost thermoelectrically controlled cold therapy. Performance is comparable to much more expensive units
  • Factory preset cooling -- Provides ideal skin temperature of 64-75 f.
  • Maximum pump pressure -- Powerful pump provides continuous flow.
  • Simple control panel -- On/Off switch also activates pump. No audible alarms to disturb patient. Indicator light blinks rapidly if flow of cooling solution is ever obstructed.
  • Integral bed hanger -- Allows flexible positioning on side rails, footboard, or even orthopedic traction bars.
  • For use with all Hot/ice blankets -- Superior blanket technology for anatomically-specific applications

Treatment Settings
The Cool-It System is the more affordable cold therapy system, specifically designed for the home user. It provides the same standards of quality construction and therapeutic benefits as the hospital unit and is ideal for continued treatment at home. It is widely used for minor injuries and surgeries that do not require a hospital stay. Instead of frequent visits to your physician, rehabilitation clinic, or other outpatient provider, you can use this system in your home and thus fit regular treatments conveniently into your schedule.

Simple, Portable, Economical
The Cool-It system provides similar benefits as ice packs without their inconvenience. It eliminates the need for refreezing or ice replacement during the treatment process. Cool-it is lightweight, has an outside mounted pump (eliminating pump heat transfer into the cooler) and uses the same high-quality blankets that are used with the Micro-Cool. The cooler is filled with ice and water and is then ready to go, pumping cold water through the insulated hose assembly, directly to affected area. The user controls the temperature by adjusting the flow of chilled water. Cool-It was designed for use anywhere; it's light and portable enough to be placed bedside, on a table, or even on the floor.
