5 Reasons To Use a CPM Machine to Recover

13th Aug 2019

The body is incredibly complex and has an astonishing ability to heal itself after an injury or surgery. However, healing can take a great deal of time and can have its own adverse effects, such as scar tissue, stiffness of joints, and short- or long-term pain. Doctors and researchers are always looking for ways to improve and speed up the healing process so that patients can continue living a high-quality life that is as close as possible to how they were living before the injury or surgery.

At The Medcom Group, we are dedicated to providing health care facilities with quality medical and rehab equipment for patients recovering from orthopedic surgery. Whether it’s knee, hip, or elbow surgery, these joints require care and attention in order for them to recover fully. Typically, these surgeries require months of rehabilitation in which there are various exercises meant to increase muscle strength, range of motion, and to slowly regain the ability to participate in normal activities. But to improve a patient’s experience after a major surgery, we want to provide rehab equipment that can reduce the amount of time it takes to fully recover.

Since its inception in 1978, CPM machines have shown to aid in the recovery time for knee replacements, hip replacements, and more. The Medcom Group has been supplying hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and patients with CPM machines since 1988 and we are also striving to provide exceptional customer service, affordable prices, and durable equipment our clients can trust. If you’re not sure if a CPM machine is right for your patients, get in touch with our team, and we’ll be happy to answer any of your questions.

Why You Should Use a CPM Machine

Increase Range of Motion

According to Orthopaedic Proceedings, stiffness after knee replacement affects between 5% and 30% of patients. Knee stiffness can be caused by excessive scar tissue, pain can hinder the success of the rehab process, or the range of motion may have been limited before the surgery took place. With the use of a CPM machine, which will passively bend the joint for the patient, it can aid in preventing scar tissue from forming. Some patients have experienced an increased range of motion after surgery that could otherwise be difficult due to knee stiffness.

Less Pain

If you’ve ever gone to the doctor for a sprained ankle, they will most likely tell you to keep your foot elevated to help reduce swelling. It’s the same idea behind a CPM machine. Swelling is often a symptom of surgeries, leading to pain in the affected joint. CPM machines elevate a patient’s arm or leg, helping to reduce the swelling and, therefore, reducing the pain.

Increase Muscle Strength

By continuously applying passive motion to a joint, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the joint are also worked, preventing them from losing strength. Many times, the patient is instructed to simply rest after surgery, which can cause them to lose muscle mass. Over the course of their recovery, the longer a patient goes without actively engaging their muscles, the higher the risk is of them losing strength. With a CPM machine, patient’s muscles will be engaged, aiding in strengthening them throughout the recovery.

Cost-Effective

Surgeries and recovering from surgery are already expensive processes. Utilizing a CPM machine can reduce the length of time a patient remains at the hospital, reducing the overall cost. There are also fewer complications when working with a CPM machine, such as joint stiffness and adhesions. When patients are able to leave the hospital sooner, they are more likely to have an increase in confidence, allowing them to work harder toward their rehabilitation goals.

At-Home Rehabilitation

CPM machines can either be used after surgery in the hospital, or at home. Oftentimes, renting a CPM machine can be incredibly beneficial for patients as they can participate in rehabilitation in the comfort of their own home. During a session, the patient can read a book, watch a movie, or simply relax on the couch or in bed while the CPM does its job.

At The Medcom Group, we supply health care facilities with a variety of rehab equipment to help patients recover faster, with less pain, and less money spent. To learn more about CPM machines, get in touch with our team today!
