The AV Impulse Foot Pump is designed to artifically stimulate the venous plantar plexus (large group of veins located in the foot) to increase blood circulation for non-ambulatory patients. Unlike the Kendall 5325 and 6325 sequential compression machines, which stimulate the blood by compression on the calves or thighs of the patients, the Impulse uses a foot sleeve with a rigid base which fills with air and then deflates in a programmed cycle, simulating the blood flow which results from walking. Like the SCD machines, the Impulse is used to reduce the effects of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), reduce pain and swelling after surgery, and stimulate arterial blood flow.
